No question is more universally human than what awaits beyond death. Every civilization has grappled with it. What distinguishes the Qurʾānic treatment is its insistence that the Day of Judgment — Ghiyāmah — is not a purely spiritual or metaphorical event, but a physical one, with described characteristics that can be examined, analyzed, and compared to what science knows about the fate of the universe.
"The Day of Judgment is a certainty. There is no doubt about it." (Al-Ḥajj 22:7)
The Qurʾān does not ask for agreement without engagement. It describes. And what it describes about Ghiyāmah — its timing, its mechanics, its relationship to the structure of the cosmos — is the subject of serious scientific and scholarly examination.
Modern cosmology has established that the universe had a beginning and will have an end. The two most widely discussed models for that end — heat death and the Big Crunch — describe a universe that is either expanding into cold dispersal or collapsing back upon itself. Neither model is definitively settled.
The Qurʾān describes the events of Ghiyāmah with a specificity that classical exegetes found difficult to interpret, precisely because the physical concepts required to understand them did not exist at the time of revelation. References to the folding of the heavens, the extinguishing of stars, the transformation of the earth — these were read allegorically because no other reading was available.
Read against current knowledge in physics and cosmology, they become something else. The descriptions of Jannah (heaven) and Jahannam (hell) in the Qurʾān are among its most vivid passages. They have most often been read as rewards and punishments in a realm entirely separate from the physical universe.

Central to any account of the afterlife is the question of what, exactly, continues. The Qurʾān's answer to the question of the soul is deliberately restrained: "And they ask you about the soul. Say: the soul is of the command of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little." (Al-Isrāʾ 17:85)
This is not evasion — it is precision. The soul, in the Qurʾānic account, is not reducible to the brain's activity or the body's biological processes. It is a distinct entity, one that interacts with the body but is not identical to it. Where the physical world is understood through deterministic systems — governed by laws that yield predictable outcomes — the soul is non-deterministic, which is precisely why it cannot be fully grasped through that same framework.
In the documentary The Soul (Rūḥ), Dr. Rastegar draws on his decades of neurophysiological research to locate where and how the soul interacts with the brain — identifying the thalamic reticular nucleus, the gateway of the attentional system, as the precise site of this interaction. He presents three experimental protocols in which alpha-wave activity tracks what he terms the override mechanism: the soul's capacity to act against instinct and direct voluntary attention. The result is an empirically grounded model of the soul — one that makes the question of its survival of death a scientific as well as a theological one.
