The Signs (Al-Āyāt) — Documentary Series
By Dr. Karim Rastegar  ·  In Persian with English subtitles

"Soon We will show Our signs in the horizons of the universe as well as within themselves so that the truth and authenticity of the Qurʾān may be revealed to them." — Al-Fuṣṣilāt 41:53

This documentary series, titled The Signs (Al-Āyāt), studies and describes the various events and phenomena of the universe as depicted in the verses of the Qurʾān. Each film examines specific Qurʾānic verses — particularly the oaths and the mutashābihāt — and reveals how they describe complex truths of the physical world with remarkable precision. All films are produced in Persian with English subtitles.

Takwīr (Sūrah al-Takwīr)

This documentary examines verses 15 to 18 of Sūrah al-Takwīr, which describe the characteristics of an important and fascinating celestial phenomenon. Given the time of revelation, the characteristics of this phenomenon were depicted metaphorically in the mutashābihāt, which has confused Qurʾānic exegetes ever since. This documentary carefully examines these verses and uncovers the phenomenon they describe.

Ṭāriq (Sūrah al-Ṭāriq)

This documentary examines the opening verses of Sūrah al-Ṭāriq, which call on "Ṭāriq" — that torn apart, piercing, and luminous star — as a witness to the rightfulness of the Day of Judgment. But what is Ṭāriq? This documentary answers that question and illustrates how the Qurʾān describes this extraordinary phenomenon through the most beautiful allegories.

The Creation of the Universe

This documentary provides a comprehensive study of all the Qurʾānic verses that describe the creation of the heavens and the earth. It presents a complete picture of how the Qurʾān depicts the creation, formation, and evolution of the universe across six stages — and shows how the mutashābihāt express this unique event in the simplest of words. It then examines how closely this description aligns with the latest discoveries in modern cosmology.

The Matter of the Universe

Modern cosmology tells us that the universe is composed of dark and light matter, which together make up only a tiny fraction of the entire universe. Their properties are crucial — they determine the formation of galaxies, stars, planets, and ultimately life. Throughout the Qurʾān the terms Layl and Nihār appear repeatedly. While many of these verses describe night and day, others describe features that do not correspond to that phenomenon at all. This documentary examines these verses and reveals how they describe the dark and light matter of the universe.

The Forces of Nature

Physicists hold that all phenomena in the universe can be described by defining the function of the four forces of nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong. According to the Qurʾān, what system governs the phenomena of our universe? Does the Qurʾān describe a similar framework? This documentary examines the Qurʾānic perspective on the governing system of the universe — its characteristics, how it functions, and how it compares to the system of the four forces of nature.

Relations in the Universe

The principles of quantum mechanics — including the uncertainty principle — describe the relations in the world of elementary particles. According to this principle, the energy and position of a particle cannot be predicted simultaneously, meaning there is no absolute certainty in the phenomena of the universe. But this uncertainty appears to contradict the theistic view that the purpose of creation is the creation of humanity. This documentary examines the Qurʾānic verses describing the world of elementary particles, then addresses the ambiguities theists face regarding uncertainty in the universe.

Symmetries and Unification in the Laws of Physics

For today's physicists, symmetry is the unified view that describes our universe at both the macro and micro levels. Without understanding symmetry, an accurate understanding of how the forces of nature work is unattainable. This documentary introduces the symmetries governing the four forces of nature, then examines the Qurʾān and shows how — through models and metaphors in the mutashābihāt verses — it describes these same symmetries in nature.

Ghiyāmah — The Day of Judgment

This two-part documentary examines the profound and often misunderstood phenomena of Ghiyāmah and the Day of Judgment. According to the Qurʾān, the Day of Judgment is an absolute certainty — yet studying the relevant verses tends to deepen the mystery rather than resolve it. Drawing on the latest discoveries in physics and cosmology, this documentary provides a precise and illuminating model of the events of Ghiyāmah, the nature of Jannah (heaven), and Jahannam (hell).

Our Unique Planetary System

The formation of our Solar System is one of the most debated topics in astronomy and planetary science. The Qurʾān's description of this event differs entirely from the prevailing scientific view. This documentary presents the Qurʾān's detailed account of all the events and mechanisms involved in the formation and evolution of our Solar System — while providing the scientific evidence that confirms those events.

The Seven Heavens

One of the most recurring and striking descriptions in the Qurʾān is that of the seven heavens. This documentary examines the relevant Qurʾānic verses in depth and explores how modern cosmology and astrophysics illuminate what the Qurʾān describes — revealing a scientific framework encoded within the ancient language of revelation.

The Four Days of Creation

This documentary explores the Qurʾānic account of the four days of creation — examining how the Qurʾān describes the formation of the earth and its preparation for life. Drawing on verses from Sūrah Fuṣṣilāt, it presents a detailed Qurʾānic model of this foundational period in the history of creation and examines it alongside current scientific understanding.
